Until these reefs were discovered in the Hecate Straight in 1987, scientists believed the Reefs to be long extinct. World-renowned paleobiologist Dr. Manfred Krautter described the discovery of these sponges to be, “like finding a herd of dinosaurs on land.” Scientists found more of these reefs in Howe Sound in 2001.

The Gambier Island Conservancy has begun a letter writing campaign to the Minister of the Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations,  opposing the opening of two new woodlots on Gambier island.  The Woodlots, due to go for tender in October, would see up to one quarter of Gambier Island clear-cut logged.

The Sunshine Coast Regional District put forward the following emergency resolution to delegates at the Union of B.C. Municipalities Conference taking place at the Vancouver Convention Centre this week.  The resolution passed quickly by the delegates Friday September 20th, 2013.  In meetings with Minister Thomson, Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations, Minister Thomson said a moratorium on existing projects would not be supported, but he will commit staff resources to start discussions about planning for Howe Sound.
