Howe Sound Community Values

It has been repeated many time by those that live, work, play and visit Howe Sound how amazing a place it  is.   People value the recovery and discovery of the marine life and see the potential to further capitalize on the natural resource and develop the new economy that is more gentle to the land.  There are signed resolutions from communities around the Sound, support and commitment of seventy plus stakeholder organizations to work together on a  comprehensive land and marine management plan.  Squamish Nation has also expressed their interest in marine planning.

Important Values have been written into community plans through public process and committed to by bylaw.  Lands under the stewardship and management of local governments have land use plans and zoning.  In these plans is zoning for multi-use, including forestry and industrial use.   Local governments through democratic processes and engagement by the public give careful consideration to any developments within their community …

How Sound is the LNG Proposal?

On June 5th, 2014, the B.C. Environmental Assessment Office announced the 30 day public comment period for the Woodfibre LNG project in Howe Sound commences June 12th and runs to July 11th.  This period has now been extended to July 27th.

If you were away the week of June 15th you missed part two of the Woodfibre Natural Gas Ltd. (the proponent)  Community Consultations, the only Province of BC hosted “open house”, and the opportunity to ask questions in person about this complex project.  These sessions are helpful for people to hear others pose questions and participate in the dialogue.  We believe more open houses …

Gambier Woodlots on Hold – What Next?

The awarding of the Woodlot licenses is on hold, but what should we expect now?

On June 24th, after a threat of legal action from the Gambier Conservancy and a private land owner, a senior official from the Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations (FLNRO) conceded that more consultation was required before moving ahead with awarding the highly controversial NE Gambier Island Crown land woodlots, and he paused the process for “a few weeks.” This has very briefly relieved the pressure on the concerned stakeholders of Gambier Island, but the underlying issue still exists–FLNRO needs to work with all the stakeholders, not just forestry interests.
