Federal Election 2015

The Federal Election is upon us and Howe Sound has been on people’s minds.  Candidate’s and their party’s positions on Woodfibre LNG and the future vision for Howe Sound have been raised during All Candidate meetings and by the media.

The Member of Parliament representing this region has the opportunity to advocate within the following areas of government: (sample list)

Fisheries and Oceans – i.e. docks, species at risk, management of commercial and recreational fish, fish habitat, derelict vessels.
Environment – air quality, the environmental assessment process, water quality, greenhouse gas emissions, weather analysis, wildlife management
Transportation – shipping, marine traffic, vessel management, rail, safety and emergency response
Parks – National parks including marine protected areas.
Aboriginal Affairs – relationship between Squamish Nation and land use.
Natural Resources – Exploration and development of natural resources of national interest.
Local infrastructure – grants for community improvement projects
Health – water and air quality standards

Protecting Howe Sound Glass Sponge Reefs

According to scientists, glass sponge reefs have been in Howe Sound before any human settlement.  Thought to be extinct more than 66 million years ago, their discovery has drawn international attention.  Sponge reefs require unique conditions, which may explain their global rarity.  Howe Sound provides those unique conditions.  Utmost respect for something so rare and fragile is deserving, particularly since they are important habitat for many species such as rockfish and spot prawns.

Save our Sound Flotilla 2015 focused on LNG

July 11th, 2015 was an overcast day that provided a dramatic backdrop for the gathering of boats at the south end of Bowyer Island in Howe Sound.  The flotilla, organized by Concerned Citizens of Bowen and My Sea to Sky, was intended to bring focus to the possible LNG carrier route in Howe Sound and the public’s opposition to the proposed Woodfibre LNG project.    To-date, the proponent Woodfibre LNG, the Provincial Government and the Federal Government have not provided satisfactory responses to the concerns of the public and communities opposed.
