On January 14th, 2014 elected officials from around Howe Sound will meet again in the spirit of shared principles of cooperation. This meeting, being hosted by Area Director Maurice Freitag is being held in the Britannia Community Centre, an appropriate venue to discuss the future for Howe Sound.
The last forum was on September 25th at Gleneagles in West Vancouver, the District of West Vancouver was the host community. In attendance were 43 participants from local governments, regional boards and observers with an interest in Howe Sound. The morning presentation session included an overview of West Vancouver’s 30-year Head Lease from the Province; the plans to protect and enhance the District’s beaches and proposed policy developments and site specific applications to climate change storms and sea level rise in West Vancouver.
The members were updated on various projects around sound, followed by a provincial update on land and resource use planning by Mayor Sturdy (Pemberton), MLA West Vancouver – Sea to Sky. An update from Future of Howe Sound Society and proposed Howe Sound mapping initiative by Stephen Foster, David Suzuki Society followed.
Discussion in the afternoon centred on commitment to the revised PRINCIPLES_OF_COOPERATION_ SEPT_25_2013, including considerations of all governments that have an interest in Howe Sound; and sharing ideas about how to move best to forward with comprehensive planning for Howe Sound.
In anticipation of support by member municipalities, First Nations, and regional districts, it was proposed that at its next meeting, now set for January 14, 2014 in Britannia Beach, the HSCF consider, in collaboration with the Provincial and Federal governments, the form of planning tool, process and terms of reference that could be engaged to move a planning process ahead that balances all interests in the Howe Sound.
The Howe Sound Community Forum is not a decision making body, but discussing the issues of concerns for Howe Sound, a vision for the future and how to protect what it is important will be a focus for the next meeting.
MP John Weston will be attending for part of the day and we look forward to news regarding the application for funding for studies to support a management plan.
